You have heard about them before, but may not realize the nutrition power they hold.


Green smoothies are becoming more and more popular among celebrities and social media posters alike. And I speak from experience when I tell you they are the most nutritional food that you can put in your body.

At the time of this writing, my family and I have been drinking them daily for 11 years. We started when our son was 5 years old, yup he started drinking them at the age of 5 (he’s now 16) and still drinking them daily. (8 oz. for him at 5yrs old and slowly increasing his way to 32 oz.)


We travel with a small blender, we take it on the plane in our checked baggage, just to make sure we don’t miss a day. When we travel for a weekend, we will pre make up to three days worth of smoothies as that is how long they are good for in the fridge. (All hotels rooms now have a refrigerator) We have missed a day here and there in the past, and boy do we feel it. Sluggish, tired, etc. The Green Smoothies actually increase our energy so much, that we make sure to always have them no matter where we go. (Haven’t travelled outside North America yet, requiring a different outlet)


So what makes them so nutritious?


Greens! Greens should be in a category all on their own, not just in the vegetable category. They provide all the individual essential amino acids that your body requires, in a more digestible form than any animal flesh can provide.


When blended up, they are more assimilable for your body as they are already “chewed” by the blender. There is also cells in green leafy vegetables that contain even more nutrition and these cell walls can only be burst open with a high speed blender. I do recommend Vitamix ( we have had ours for 11 years and its still going strong. Blendtec is also a high speed blender, so either one of those will work the best. (Put one of those on your health investment list for when you can afford it, you won’t regret it.)

In the mean time, most blenders will be sufficient until you can acquire a high speed one.

Unfortunately our teeth are not able to grind the greens up enough to be able to burst the cell walls open. Thats why blending is so imperative.


When you add fruit to the smoothies, you make it more palatable, also getting all the nutrients those fruits have to offer.

Please don’t worry about the natural sugars in fruits, they metabolize differently in the body than processed sugar. (That is a whole other story)


So here’s how to make them.


Take two handfuls of your green leafy vegetable.

Put it in your blender with 1.5 cups water.


Add 3 or 4 different fruits.

Blend again (tastes way better and more chance the cell walls are burst open)



It is recommended to drink 32oz daily at least.

And when you do, (I have been recommending drinking green smoothies daily for 11 years to my clients) majority of people had an increase in energy, slept better and had bigger and an easier time with bowel movements. I mean thats a plus all around.


And other moms out there, with the little ones, this was one thing I was always concerned about, the pooping. After my son started drinking the daily green smoothies, he never had a problem pooping again. Start them young!!


The key, is to keep them simple.

Today our smoothie was Kale, Orange, Banana, Pear.



Another important thing to remember is to switch your greens daily. You want to have an abundance of greens in your diet, and they freeze well. So prep them into sandwich bags and toss them in the freezer. That makes for easy grab and go, and you will never be worried about greens going bad either. Just freeze them.


Some of the greens to try are… Spinach, Kale (curly, dinosaur, purple), Romaine Lettuce, Celery, Beet Tops, Carrot Tops, Collards, Bok Choy, Swiss Chard (green, red, rainbow) Dandelion (great for constipation)

These are only some of the common ones in grocery stores today (at least in my area)


Only choose one green daily and switch the following day.


Some of my favourite combinations are…


Spinach, Banana, Watermelon, Strawberry

– Celery, Apple, Orange, Pear

Kale, Banana, Strawberry, Blueberry

– Beet Tops, Mango, Banana, Strawberry

Swiss Chard, Peach, Orange, Strawberry


Honestly, I just throw in whatever we have now, and mix it up a bit from day to do. In the winter months, there is not an abundance of fruit where I live in Canada. So its pretty much, whatever greens for the day and Pears, Oranges, Apples, Bananas, and mixed frozen fruit (which I always keep hand)


Try them out, keep it simple. And if you’re needing a bit more sweetness, try a pitted medjool date or two.


Try a Green Smoothie for 30 days and notice the difference in how you feel. I’m confident you will have an increase in energy, improved sleep, and better bowel movements.
